5 Common Triggers for Emotional Eating Habit
Emotional eating can be bad for your health. Specially if you are looking for fast weight loss, you should try to eliminate this habit as soon as possible.
Each person has his or her own emotional eating triggers. Some are more common than others, though and these are the ones I wish to focus on in this article.
The reason why this is important is that by getting to know your own emotional eating triggers, you will gain an awareness of what’s causing you to overeat and you’ll be more able to stop it once and for all. So, let me present the most common triggers you may be facing:
1. Stress – This is probably the biggest trigger of them all which is why it even got its own name (stress eating). Stress is such a big issue in our life these days that you simply can’t avoid it totally, you just need to minimize it and be able to deal with it.
Some forms of stress reduction activities include meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, physical exercise, more sleep. You need to reduce stress as much as possible. This may involve making some tough decisions.
2. Anxiety – Worrying too much can lead you to find comfort in food. We are filled with worries (something that advertisers and certain media outlets seem to promote) and it can be difficult to overcome these. The main thing you can do is to stop worrying about things you can’t control or affect by yourself. For instance, worrying about the environment or pollution is part of being a good citizen but you can’t let it be on your mind all the time.
3. Boredom – while this doesn’t often gets called an emotion, it certainly is. Boredom is an emotional eating trigger as it is a mental state that can reduce your cognitive defences and make you vulnerable to eating urges. Being bored also enhances whatever negative emotions you may be feeling at the moment, so it’s a magnifier of other triggers.
4. Loneliness – Feeling alone and sorry for yourself can also drive you to find comfort in food. To fight this simply surround yourself with people. They don’t need to be for romance. They can be friends and acquaintances. It will just eliminate the loneliness you feel.
5. Bad body image - This is a major source of comfort eating. You’re actually dissatisfied with how you look (usually due to your weight) so you actually continue to add weight by overeating. This is actually why you have to stop emotional eating as fast as possible as it can continue to add pounds to your weight all the time.
